16 Asics Ties For Third Place

On Saturday afternoon, 16 Asics started out a little slow, but picked up the pace as the pool play continued on. The team faced Mt. Hood 16 Black and it was a three game fight to the finish 18-25, 25-5, and 15-10. Our serve receive and offense had a slow start, but really came on in the second game. Our second match was against NW Jrs. Elite 25-10, 25-16. Maddi Seidl and Meagan Hollis ran the offense well. Tayler Blackman and McKenna Hoyt racked up four kills each and Kiana Davis added two kills of her own. Maddi served up eleven points with one ace and Carly Sims served up eight points with one ace. Macee Utecht also served well contributing eight points and four aces. Tierney Uhlenkott and Taylor Trevino played the net well and really improved on attacking the over feeds. Alexa Bond passed very well which helped the setters run the offense. Our final match of the day was against Puget Sound 16 National 25-22, 20-25, 11-15. We finished second in our pool for the day and prepared ourselves to face PVC Blue the next day in pool play.

In our second round of pool play on Sunday we faced PVC Blue. This has been a long standing battle because our teams are so evenly matched. PVC Blue has come out on top our last two meetings so it was time for a change. The girls played tough all the way and fought hard to get to twenty-five first. This time Cowlitz came out on top, winning 25-23, 25-23. Tierney, Tayler B., and Taylor T. were very aggressive with their hitting. Tierney contributed nine kills and seven points serving. Tayler B. racked up seven kills and eight points serving. Taylor T. contributed with four kills and great net play. Maddi had six points on serve with three aces. Once again Meagan and Maddi made great set selections to keep the offense moving. Our next match of the day was against Sudden Impact 25-21, 25-19. Maddi and Meagan served tough. Maddi had nine points on serve with one ace and Meagan served up six points with one ace. Alexa passed well and played great defense. Macee contributed six kills on offense, followed by Tierney with three kills, and Carly and Maddi with two kills each. Kiana also played the front row well. Our last match was against Spokane Sky 22-25, 25-9, 15-10. Macee had seven points on kills, Tierney contributed five kills for points, and Taylor T. had four. Tayler B. served up ten points with two ace serves, and Tierney had nine points on serve with five aces. The girls played very well and placed first in their pool.

On Monday our first bracket match was against Puget Sound 16 National. It was a hard fought battle again, but Cowlitz pulled out the win 25-23, 18-25, and 15-10. Maddi had the hot hand on serving racking up fifteen points with one ace, followed by Tayler B. with seven points. Meagan also contributed with six points on serve. All hitters contributed to a successful offense and Maddi and Meagan made wise set selections. Alexa, Macee, and Tierney had some awesome defensive plays against a hard hitting team. Great job everyone!

We moved on to the semi final match against the WVBA 16-Shannon. We played very well against this hard hitting team; however, we lost 25-23, 19-25, 7-15. The team worked hard and made the WVBA coach a little nervous after winning the first game. Tierney and Taylor T. played the net well. Tierney had eight kills and two block assists. Taylor T. had one solo block and one block assist. Maddi had a couple of great kills down the line, and Kiana contributed with three kills and one block assist. Meagan served up seven points on serve and had one block assist. Macee contributed with four kills, seven points on serve, and some great defensive plays. Alexa also played great defense.

It was a great tournament for the team and the coaching staff looks forward to continuing to improve every one's play as we prepare for our tournament in Denver . It will be a great experience for all the girls.

4th Place at Power League Qualifier

The team understood how important it was for them to perform well this weekend. It was truly a team effort. Everyone contributed to our success this weekend!

Our first match in pool play was against Blues 16 Power. We defeated them 25-14, 25-18. Kiana Davis played the net well and earned two kills. She also served up four points and one ace serve. McKenna Hoyt also played tough at the net and racked up three kills for the team. Carly Sims contributed with one kill and some great set ups to help the setters out. She also served well. Taylor Trevino served up three points and had three solo blocks at the net. Tayler Blackman had the hot hand at the serving position earning six points with two ace serves. Macee Utecht also contributed with four service points, three of which were aces. Alexa Bond contributed two ace serves and four points. Tierney Uhlenkott also saw success with her serve, earning three points and two aces. Maddi Seidl contributed nine set assists and Meagan Hollis had three.

Our next match was against Mt. Hood, and we won 25-20, 25-22. Tierney was hot at the net racking up nine kills and one block assist. Macee and Tayler B. provided the team with great passing so the setters could run the offense. Macee served Mt. Hood off the court with seven aces and sixteen total points. Meagan served up four aces and seven total points. Maddi served up two aces and four total points. Maddi and Meagan moved the sets around well and set up some nice plays.

The third match was against Oregon NW Jrs., and we pulled out the victory 25-22, 25-18. The first game was close, but we pulled through with some great defense. Tayler B. and Macee were digging machines in the back row. Meagan and Maddi had the hot hands on serving for this match. Maddi contributed seven total points and two aces. Meagan served up six points and one ace. Macee also contributed five total points and three aces. Tierney was the leader in kills once again with eight. Kiana came into the front row and contributed with good net play. Taylor T. also contributed to good front row play.

The first cross-over match was against Excel, and we defeated them 23-25, 25-18, 15-9. The first game was very close, too close to lose, but the girls rallied and came back to defeat Excel in the next two games. We are very evenly matched against Excel, so it is always a fight for the win. Macee played aggressively in the front row, contributing six kills, and was great on defense in the back row. Tayler B. also was a dynamo in the back row. She really made some amazing defensive plays. Tayler B. also gave us some great blocking in the front row at a couple of critical moments. Alexa had the hot serving hand with eight total points and two aces. Meagan and Maddi also made good on their serving. Meagan put up six total points and Maddi served for ten total points and one ace. Tierney contributed five kills in the front row and had one solo block. Meagan had fifty-two sets and fifteen assists and Maddi put up twenty-seven sets with eight assists. On a special note, I don’t think the six players on the floor would have pulled through this match with out the great cheering that came from our bench. It was truly a team effort!

Yahoo!!! We made it to the Gold division! Our last match of the day was against OJVA Gold. This was going to be a tough match-up, because there was a definite height advantage! However, the girls played tough defense, and despite their coach's small outburst (sorry parents/players!) we defeated OJVA 25-19, 25-23. McKenna and Taylor T. contributed with a couple of solo blocks in the front row. Taylor T. also had three kills. Macee contributed eight kills in the front row and eight total serving points with three aces. Once again Macee, Alexa, Tayler B., and Tierney provided the team with some great passing and defense. Maddi had twenty-six sets and nine assists and Meagan contributed sixteen sets with five assists. I am so proud of the team’s performance this weekend. Thank you Robin, Tiffany, Des, and Cathy for taking stats this weekend, it really is helping the team see what they need to work on.

Great Start at Longview 16's Tournament

The team started off strong in their first match against Toutle, winning 25-11, 25-19. Carly Sims played the net well, earning three attempts and two kills. Tierney Uhlenkott led the team with seven attempts and three kills. Maddi Seidl put up twenty-six sets and earned eight assists. Meagan Hollis set the ball up sixteen times with five assists. Taylor Trevino served tough earning, five points for the team with one ace serve. Macee Utecht served up twelve points and earned one ace. Alexa Bond's passing was strong and helped the setters run the quick offense. Tayler Blackman passed and blocked well.

In match two of pool play, we dominated team ACES, defeating them 25-8, 25-11. Meagan and Maddi ran the offense very well. Maddi earned seven assists and Meagan racked up ten assists. Kiana Davis earned six attempts with two kills, and Macee contributed seven attempts with four kills. Tierney, Tayler B., and Taylor T. were strong on the block. McKenna Hoyt contributed with a strong block at the front and backed up the setters well.

Next we faced Canby Blue. This team attacked the ball more often, so our defense really had to step up to the challenge. We defeated Canby 25-20, 25-12. Maddi turned in thirty-eight attempts with 11 assists and Meagan had thirty-nine attempts with thirteen assists. They both did a great job of mixing up their sets to throw the blockers off. Maddi turned in eight hitting attempts with three kills. Other hitting standouts were Macee with nineteen attempts and five kills, Alexa with fourteen attempts and two kills, Taylor T. with four attempts and two kills, and Tierney with fifteen attempts and two kills. Tayler B. served well, earning the team five points and passed consistently. Carly played the net well and handled the second set with confidence.

In bracket play, we faced Excel NW Black. We were victorious, 25-15, 25-17. Tayler B. and Macee led the team with their strong serving. Tayler B. earned six points including an ace serve and Macee racked up eight points. Some amazing defense was played by Macee, Alexa, and Tierney. Taylor T. put up a strong block and earned a couple of kills. Carly also put up a strong block. Alexa played well at the net with 14 hitting attempts and three kills.

Next we faced Athena Alpha. This was a hard fought battle going three games, but the team dug deep and pulled out a win, 25-16, 15-25, 15-11. The defense adjusted well to their three left handed hitters! Meagan and Maddi set well once again, and made critical sets when we needed them. Passing standouts were Macee, Tayler B., and Tierney. Maddi earned three hitting kills and Tierney racked up six kills. Maddi was also a serving standout with ten points.

We did it! We made it to the final and faced Capital. We have played this team in the past and they are always a strong performing team with great defense. We struggled to put the ball away when we needed to, and Capital defeated us in three games 25-20, 13-25, 5-15. I am very proud of the way the team played for their first tournament. They followed through with their individual goals as well as with their team goals. We still have some work to do, but I am looking forward to the rest of the season. Thank you parents for all your support! We couldn't do it without you.
